### Definition

The ability to translate an operational metric into a dollar consequence or strategic implication, converting "Our on-time delivery rate dropped three points" into "This corresponds to an estimated $\[X\] in customer retention risk."

A board does not operate on operational language. A board operates on financial language and strategic risk. An operations leader who presents metrics without translation is presenting data that requires the board to do the interpretation work themselves, which they either skip or get wrong.

### Indicators

- You have presented a metric that the board acknowledged, then moved past without any action.
- You've been asked "So what does that mean for us?" after presenting an operational number.
- No operational metric you present has a stated dollar consequence attached.

### Quick Win

- Take one operational metric you report regularly to the board.
- Write the dollar consequence of it moving 10% in the wrong direction in one sentence.
- If you cannot write the consequences, you don't have board-ready language for that metric yet.
