### Definition

The sustainability and repeatability of a company's EBITDA, that is, the degree to which it reflects genuine operational efficiency rather than deferred maintenance, inflated cost deferrals, or suppressed investment in infrastructure.

An EBITDA number that looks strong because capital investment in operational infrastructure was deferred is not the same as one built on genuine efficiency. Acquirers and PE firms distinguish between them in due diligence. Most founders do not distinguish them until they're told to.

### Indicators

- Your EBITDA includes a significant one-time cost reduction that is not repeatable next year.
- Operational infrastructure investment (documentation, systems, team training) has been deferred for more than one budget cycle.
- No separation exists between recurring operational costs and one-time investments in how you report margins.

- Check your last reported EBITDA for any cost reduction that won't repeat next year (deferred maintenance, one-time cuts).
- If it exists and is not flagged separately, your EBITDA quality is lower than the headline number suggests.
