### Definition

A category of core business software that integrates financial, operational, and data management functions into a single system, typically the highest stakes technology decision in a mid-market company, with the longest implementation timeline and highest failure rate when begun without adequate organizational preparation.

ERP implementations fail most often, not because the wrong system was chosen, but because the company wasn't ready to implement any system. Chart-of-accounts misalignment, vendor master duplication, and undocumented processes are the leading causes of ERP project failure, and all three failure causes are detectable before vendor selection begins.

- An ERP evaluation is underway before a formal readiness assessment has been completed.
- Your chart of accounts is inconsistent across entities or lacks a single owner.
- The ERP budget doesn't include the cost of data migration, internal team hours, or a 20% contingency.
