### Definition

The structural shift from a generalist operations team where one or two people cover all functions to a team where specific domains (vendor management, customer operations, data and analytics, and field coordination) are owned by dedicated roles with defined authority.

A generalist operations team that worked well at 15 people reliably breaks at 40 to 60 people, not because the people changed, but because the number of functions each person is expected to cover has exceeded the realistic capacity for any individual to do all of them well. 

Functional specialization is the structural response to that overload.

- Your most senior operations person is responsible for vendor management, data analytics, and customer escalations simultaneously.
- A specific operational function has been consistently underperforming with no named specialist responsible for it.
- The last hire you made in operations was "another generalist" rather than a specialist targeting a specific gap.
