### Definition

The set of systems — decision rights documentation, meeting rhythms, escalation protocols, and priority alignment frameworks, that make a management layer function coherently rather than creating the appearance of structure without its benefits.

Adding managers without building management infrastructure produces a middle layer that passes problems upward and blocks information from flowing downward. The infrastructure is what makes delegation real rather than nominal. 

Without the management infrastructure, a promoted individual contributor becomes a senior IC who happens to have direct reports.

### Indicators

- You have added managers in the last 12 months, but decision speed has not increased.
- Managers on your team escalate decisions that should be within their authority to make independently.
- No written authority map exists for what each manager can decide alone versus bringing to you.

### Quick Win

- Ask a manager on your team to state the company's top three priorities.
- Ask a second manager the same question.
- If their answers differ, priority alignment — the first of the four management infrastructure components, is not yet working.
- Apply the same diagnostic to decision rights, escalation protocols, and meeting rhythm separately.
