### Definition

The capacity of an operation to grow revenue faster than it grows costs — measured by the Operational Leverage Ratio (OLR), where sustained improvement over time indicates the operation is becoming more efficient as the company scales.

A growing company that doesn't track operational leverage may be building genuine efficiency or silently accumulating a cost structure that outpaces its revenue — and has no way to tell which is true.

Operational leverage is the measure that makes this distinction visible before it becomes an unmanageable trend.

### Indicators

- You track operational cost and revenue separately but never as a ratio.
- Your operational cost ratio has increased for two consecutive quarters without a deliberate decision to invest ahead of revenue.
- No board presentation has ever included an OLR calculation.
