### Definition

The first stage of vendor dependency degradation, when a vendor's metrics trend in the wrong direction for three or more consecutive periods while remaining within SLA tolerance, signaling a declining relationship before it becomes a formal compliance issue.

Performance drift is the gap between "still within SLA" and "actually getting worse." Without an independent measurement system, this gap is invisible. 

A vendor can be degrading in practice while technically compliant on paper, and the first sign a company notices is a Stage 3 contract rigidity or a Stage 4 lock-in situation.

- A vendor's metrics have trended in the wrong direction for two or more consecutive quarters without a formal response.
- You are relying on vendor self-reported performance rather than independently measured data.
- No threshold exists in your vendor management process for when a trending (but still compliant) metric triggers a conversation.

- Pull their self-reported performance for the last quarter.
- Now pull three recent delivery or performance data points from your operational records.
- Compare your independently measured figures against the vendor's self-reported rate.
- A gap of more than three percentage points is your finding.
