### Definition

The named individual, specifically the person who executes a process most frequently and not their manager, is responsible for maintaining a process's documentation, testing it periodically, and flagging when it needs updating.

A process without a named owner is a process that belongs to no one and will be updated by no one. The single owner principle is not about accountability in the abstract. It is about creating a specific, named person whose job it literally is to keep the document current.

### Indicators

- SOPs in your library have owner fields that say "operations team" or a role title rather than a specific person's name.
- An SOP was last updated by someone who no longer works at your company.
- No review date exists on your process documents, or the review date has passed with no update.
