### Definition

The second stage of vendor dependency degradation, characterized by a vendor's account manager becoming slower to respond, contact turnover increasing, and exception requests being increasingly redirected to "standard process," signaling that your account is being deprioritized.

Responsiveness decline is the behavioral warning sign that precedes contract rigidity (Stage 3). By the time a vendor is formally inflexible on pricing, the responsiveness decline has usually been visible for two or three quarters.

Catching it at Stage 2 preserves renegotiation leverage that Stage 3 eliminates.

### Indicators

- A vendor's account manager response time has slowed meaningfully in the last six months.
- A vendor contact has been replaced more than once in 12 months without your account being transitioned cleanly.
- An exception request that would have been approved 12 months ago is now being redirected to the standard process.

- Measure a key vendor's average email or ticket response time last quarter against the quarter before.
- If the trend is slower, that is your Stage 2 signal — before it becomes a formal problem.
