### Definition

The operating principle that every SOP and every significant operational decision has exactly one named person responsible — not a team, not a role, and not "whoever is available," specifically the person who executes the process most often.

A document owned by everyone is maintained by no one. A decision that belongs to multiple people is made differently by each or escalated by none because each assumes another has handled it.

The single owner principle is the structural rule that closes both gaps simultaneously by making accountability specific and non-negotiable.

### Indicators

- SOP owner fields in your library say "operations" or a role title rather than a person's name.
- A decision category in your team has been made differently by different people in the last year.
- A key SOP's named owner has left the company without the document being reassigned.

- Ask: "Is exactly one person's name attached, or is it the team?"
- Fix any name that mentions "the team" you can find.
