### Definition

A methodology for producing a defensible market-rate figure by combining data from three independent sources, typically a role-specific data aggregator (LinkedIn Salary Insights), a separate self-reported salary platform (Glassdoor), and a direct conversation with a recruiter who places roles in the relevant industry and geography rather than relying on any single source that can be dismissed as selective.

A benchmark from one source is an assertion. A benchmark from three independent sources is evidence. 

The difference matters when presenting to a board, defending a compensation decision, or explaining an operational cost ratio - any context in which the benchmark's credibility will be tested.

- Compensation decisions in your team have been made without a formal three-source benchmark.
- A board member has questioned the credibility of a benchmark you presented without being able to explain its sourcing.
