### Definition

Operational metrics that track activity, volume, or effort — numbers that can improve without any corresponding improvement in the underlying operational reality the metric claims to represent.

Vanity metrics are appealing because they reliably go up. Response volume, tickets opened, documents created, and emails sent are metrics that can easily increase without any improvement in operational outcome. 

An operations function that optimizes vanity metrics is optimizing the appearance of performance rather than performance itself.

### Indicators

- A metric on your dashboard can be made to look better — by changing scope, reporting period, or counting convention without any improvement in the underlying customer or business outcome.
- An activity-based metric (tickets resolved, calls handled, documents produced) appears on a board-facing operations summary.
- A metric has never been tested against the question, "Could this number improve without the underlying outcome improving?"
