D02 - Key Person Redundancy

Definition

The operational state in which a named backup has been cross-trained on a critical function, has appropriate system access, and has successfully executed the function independently during at least one quarterly test — verifying capability, not documented intention.

A backup on paper is not redundancy coverage. The distinction between "We have a named backup" and "Our backup has run this function independently during a real test" is the entire gap between documented and genuine operational resilience.

Indicators

• A backup exists on paper for a critical function but has never executed it independently.
• No quarterly test has ever been run for any critical function's backup coverage.
• At least one critical function currently has no identified backup — or has one who has never executed the function independently, even in a controlled test.

Quick Win

• Name your one documented backup for a critical function.
• Ask, "Have they ever executed it alone?"
• If they have not, it's not backup coverage yet.
