Definition
The first stage of operational maturity is characterized by heavy personal execution, minimal documentation, and informal coordination, which is appropriate at an early stage when systems are being built for the first time and the highest leverage activity is creating rather than delegating.
A builder-stage leader who tries to delegate before the systems being delegated are stable is delegating chaos.
The Builder-stage exists to describe a specific, legitimate operational mode, not a failure state, and to identify what the highest-leverage activity actually is at that stage.
Indicators
- You are the primary executor of most operational functions rather than the designer of systems others execute.
- Minimal process documentation exists. Most operational knowledge is in your head or passed verbally.
- You have tried to delegate, but the outcomes were inconsistent, suggesting the systems weren't yet stable enough to delegate.
Quick Win
- Ask: "Are you personally executing most operational work or designing systems others execute?"
- If it is the former, that is not a problem. It is your correct current stage.
