Board Operations Summary
This page explains Board Operations Summary and its relevance to business operations.
D05 - Measurement Sophistication
Definition
A single-page, leadership-facing operational report presenting a curated set of metrics in plain language designed to enable a decision, not to demonstrate effort or volume.
Most board operations summaries are status reports that grew. A one-page format forces the right questions: Which three decisions does this board need to make? What is the minimum information required to make them?
Everything else is overhead.
Indicators
- Your last board operations update had more than ten metrics on it.
- A board member has asked a clarifying question that you had to go back to your team to answer.
- You've never had a board approve an operational investment based solely on a metric you presented.
Quick Win
- Count the number of metrics on your last board operations update.
- If it's more than eight metrics, pick three metrics you'd keep if you could only present those.
