Definition

A metric that signals a future operational problem weeks before it appears in lagging data, enabling preventive intervention rather than reactive response.

A leading indicator system is the difference between managing your operation and managing a record of it. The same problem that requires an emergency postmortem when discovered through a lagging metric can often be resolved in hours when caught through a leading one.

Indicators

• No metric you currently track moves before a customer-visible problem appears.
• You've had the same operational failure occur more than once because you only saw it after the fact the first time.
• Your dashboard tells you what happened last month rather than what's likely to happen next month.

Quick Win

• Pick one lagging metric.
• Ask: "What metric would change measurably 2–4 weeks before that lagging indicator does?"
• That's your candidate leading indicator.
