Definition
A structured seven-section document covering an organization's business model, team structure, operating rhythm, process library, vendor register, technology map, and decision log, which is the primary institutional knowledge artifact for any mid-market operations function.
An operations playbook is the document that makes an operations function transferable, investable, and survivable.
A company without one has operational knowledge that lives in people, not in a system, which means it leaves when they do.
Indicators
- If you left tomorrow, it would take your replacement six months to understand how the operation actually runs.
- An investor, acquirer, or board member has asked, "Where does your operational knowledge live?" and the honest answer was "in our heads."
- No comprehensive written document exists covering how your operation is structured, what it runs on, and who decides what.

- Ask yourself honestly: "If you left tomorrow, how long would it take your replacement to understand how the operation actually runs?"
- Write down the number.
- If it is more than 30 days, the playbook does not yet exist.
