Definition

A transition methodology in which a replacement vendor runs alongside the existing vendor for a defined period, confirming performance, completing integration testing, and resolving gaps before the original vendor relationship is formally terminated.

A vendor transition that does not include a parallel phase is a gamble. A parallel migration is the operational equivalent of not burning a bridge until you are certain the new one can bear weight.

Most vendor transitions that fail do so not because the new vendor was wrong, but because the transition was executed too abruptly.

Indicators

• A vendor transition in the past 12-24 months failed or disrupted operations significantly.
• No current vendor transition plan includes a defined parallel operation period.
• A vendor you'd like to replace is still in place partly because the transition feels too risky.

Quick Win

• Name a vendor relationship you'd like to exit but have not exited till now.
• Ask what a parallel operation period would need to look like before you'd feel safe cutting ties with the vendor.
