D10 - Operational Leverage

Definition

The operational standards governing private-equity-owned companies — regular OLR tracking, documentation maintained at due diligence quality, and operational metrics presented in formats directly legible to a financial buyer or investment committee.

PE operating model standards are useful regardless of ownership structure. They represent a floor for operational documentation quality and measurement sophistication that any company approaching scale should be building toward.

Companies that adopt these standards early tend to have faster, more valuable exit processes when they eventually occur.

Indicators

  • Your operation's documentation and metrics would not survive a 30-day due diligence review without significant preparation.
  • No OLR or equivalent efficiency ratio is tracked and reported at the leadership level.
  • PE-grade reporting expectations have been identified as a gap in any board or investor conversation.

Quick Win

  • Pull your three highest-spend vendor contracts.
  • Confirm you can produce them in under five minutes and that each one has been reviewed in the last 12 months.
  • If you cannot do both, that is your weakest due diligence link.
