D04 - Team Structure Clarity

Definition

A job posting format that describes the specific results a successful candidate will produce in their first 90 days and first 12 months, replaces generic responsibility lists with observable outcomes, and explicitly names who the role is not for.

A generic job description attracts generic candidates. An outcome-first description attracts candidates who have already done the specific job this role requires because they can read the outcomes and recognize their track record in them.

Indicators

  • Your last operations hire interviewed well and struggled in the first 90 days.
  • Job postings for your operations roles list responsibilities rather than the specific problems the role will own.
  • No disqualifier exists in your current job postings. Nothing explicitly names who this role is not for.

Quick Win

  • Pull your last job posting.
  • Count how many bullet points describe responsibilities vs. specific 90-day outcomes.
  • If it's mostly describes the responsibilities, rewrite the top three responsibilities.
