Overview


The Carlos Rivera departure was the issue's editorial origin. A $3k-$11k annual compensation gap producing a $33k replacement cost is not a compensation failure. It is a benchmarking failure.

Lisa Park did not know the market rate. She made a counter-offer based on what the firm could afford, not on what the market required.

The system exists to ensure the market rate is known before the departure conversation, not discovered during the search for a replacement.

Meridian Professional Group gave us the right setting because of the context. A professional services firm where operational roles are perceived as overhead rather than as talent investment is where the compensation gap most commonly accumulates.

The eleven-year tenure of the firm without a compensation benchmarking system is not negligence. It is the norm at companies where operations were not historically a formal function.


What Didn't Make The Final Cut


A section on equity compensation for operations leaders on how to evaluate and negotiate options or restricted stock in a mid-market company. The material is genuinely important as a component of total compensation.

We removed it because equity valuation requires company-specific modeling that a general framework cannot be accurate enough to be actionable. This topic belongs in a dedicated later issue.

We also cut a section on compensation transparency policy to discuss whether to disclose salary ranges publicly and to existing employees. The transparency debate is real. It belongs in a leadership and HR philosophy issue, not in a compensation benchmarking system.


What We Were Thinking


The thirty-minute research exercise that could have prevented $33k in avoidable costs. That ratio is the issue's entire argument.
